TLDR

- Results came out Wednesday, Oct. 28. Tapestry beat 19 other finalists from across the country.
- It's the first time Tapestry has made the list, which USA TODAY has run for three years.

- Two Lakeville shops: downtown at 20788 Holyoke Ave. and the newer one at 160th and Cedar.
Lakeville has the best independent coffee shop in America. Not top 10. Number one.
Tapestry Coffee took first place in USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards for Best Independent Coffee Shop. The results came out Oct. 28, and Bring Me The News has the story.
From Finalist to First Place
Earlier this fall, Tapestry landed on a list of 20 finalists picked by USA TODAY editors and topic experts. Then it went to a public vote. You could vote once a day, every day, until 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19.
We asked you to vote back on Oct. 12. And during the vote, co-owners Scott Van Daalen and Brady Heerema went on KARE 11 to rally support. It worked.
This is Tapestry's first time on the list. And it didn't sneak in at #10. It went straight to the top.
The rest of the top 10 includes shops from Portland, Chicago, Charlotte, Oklahoma City and Los Angeles. Wichita's Reverie Roasters came in at #4. A Lakeville coffee shop beat all of them.
What the Judges Liked
USA TODAY's editors say Tapestry "roasts its coffee locally and serves handcrafted drinks, creative seasonal specials, and all-day breakfast."

They called out approachable blends like Abstract, plus its specialty lattes. When Tapestry first made the finalist list, editors described the shop as "contemporary and cozy." They also named the bourbon caramel latte and the seasonal blackberry cobbler espresso.
If you've never been, that's your order.
"Genuinely in Shock"
Co-owner Kiley Van Daalen posted about the win on social media:
"Genuinely in shock. So proud of the blood sweat and tears my co-owners Brady, Scott & I have put in. The last 5 years certainly haven't been all easy, but they continue to pay off everyday."
She said the award belongs to more than the three owners. It belongs to the staff, the people who've been coming in since day one, the regulars who bring friends, and everyone who voted every single day.
She also thanked the Lakeville and Dakota County community "that has believed in us and supported us along the way."
How Tapestry Got Here
Brady Heerema and Scott and Kiley Van Daalen opened Tapestry in 2021. Back then, great coffee meant a drive up to Minneapolis or St. Paul. So they asked why Lakeville didn't have a place like that.
The downtown shop at 20788 Holyoke Ave. used to be Mainstreet Coffee, a Lakeville spot for about 20 years. The new owners remodeled it, added house-made syrups and started roasting their own beans, according to Daily Coffee News.
This summer, they opened a second Lakeville location in the old Donut Star building at 7656 160th St. W. We covered that opening in July. It has a parking lot, lots of windows and donuts from a St. Paul bakery.
Downtown Lakeville Is on a Roll
This is the second big award for a Holyoke Avenue business this month. Niche Books was just named Minnesota's Emerging Retailer of the Year. And Team USA's Paralympic curling team picked Lakeville as its home ice this fall, too.
Now the best independent coffee shop in America is on Holyoke Avenue as well.
The Bottom Line
A Lakeville coffee shop beat out shops from Portland to Los Angeles to take first place. And it got there because people in the south metro kept voting, day after day.
